The 11th edition of CinéMasala

From 9 to 11 November 2023, the 11th edition of CinéMasala invites you to discover the streets of Delhi and its inhabitants. Discover the programme on the following page!

The festival

Founded in 2013, the CinéMasala film festival brings together researchers from the University of Lausanne who work on the history, religions and languages of South Asia (India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, etc.) and who are keen to open up their field of research to a wider audience.

Accessible to everyone, and famous in its Indian version thanks to Bollywood, cinema is certainly the most appropriate medium for this approach. The aim of the festival – four evenings during the month of November – is to bring this region of the world to the attention of as many people as possible and to establish a dialogue between the city and university researchers. In order to open this festival up to a varied audience, we have decided to make it nomadic: the films are screened on the university campus and in the centre of the city of Lausanne.

The films selected, both fiction and documentaries, by Asian and non-Asian filmmakers, tackle both ‘traditional’ subjects and more contemporary and sometimes disconcerting themes. As South Asia encompasses an infinite variety of languages and cultures, each film offers an original and authentic look at a region of the world that is still little-known, yet set to occupy a central place in tomorrow’s world. Year after year, South Asia is explored through a variety of original themes and angles. The festival’s mission is to highlight the rapid evolution of this world through at least a partial selection of recent films. After the screening, some films are commented on by researchers specialising in the subject, or by the directors themselves, who answer questions from the audience.

The festival has always been, and remains, free of charge. Our loyal partners support us in this, but the survival of the festival and the fact that it is free also depend on public support.
